Car driven at players after football game

-

Eleven people were taken to hospital after a car hit them in a car park after a football match in Wales.

South Wales Police said a 35-year-old man was arrested following the incident at Cornelly United’s ground in Bridgend on Thursday night.

The arrested man, who was held on suspicion of wounding with intent, has since been recalled to prison, police added.

The club said the incident took place after the reserves beat Margam 5-0 at their Meadow Street ground in North Cornelly.

One player, Scott Walker, suffered tissue damage to his knee and hip.

“He will be on crutches for the next few weeks and will also need lots of physio. Things could have been a lot, lot worse,” the club said.

“The Walker family and the entire club would like to thank everybody for their well wishes and messages of support, we are truly overwhelmed.”

The club confirmed yesterday’s first and second XI matches would go ahead as planned.

“We only feel it is right for the club to try to gain all three points in both fixtures for our injured lads in hospital,” said a spokesperson.

Detective Inspector Claire Lamerton appealed for video footage of the smash.

“We know that there were a number of people at the club, many of whom will have captured the incident,” she said.
