Robertson is not a one-off Spiders success
New Queen’s Park president Gerry Crawley has told the players at the Hampden club to be inspired by the rise and rise of Andy Robertson.
Crawley, who played for the Spiders in the 1980s was elected earlier this month.
He said: “Andrew played for the club before I came back, and what he has gone on to do is incredible.
“To play in last weekend’s Champions League Final was an amazing achievement.
“However, there was a lot of focus on how unique his rise from us to Dundee United to Hull to Liverpool was, and how it could never happen again. “I do not see it that way. “I want the players to be inspired by what Andrew has done, but not to feel that no one else like him can come along.”
“This club has always produced players that go on to have great careers.
“Andrew is almost as famous an old boy as Sir Alex Ferguson, and during my playing days John McGregor went to Liverpool and Alan Irvine moved to Everton.
“And Barry Douglas was selected to be with the Scotland team that is in Mexico.
“So we have produced hundreds of players that have moved on and had great careers and that has to be the driver for our young players.”
Former Kilmarnock winger Scott McLean, who spent last season with Troon Juniors and Albion Rovers, has been invited to undergo a second trial at Cardiff City.
The 20- year- old, who made one appearance for the Rugby Park club in a 2-2 draw with Celtic back in August 2015, was let go last summer.
He joined his local junior side, as well as having a trial with Cardiff in February.
The Coatbridge outfit took him back to the senior ranks in March and McLean has now been asked to train again with the newly-promoted side’s under-23 squad.
Arbroath goalkeeping coach John Ritchie has passed away at the age of 70.
Ritchie was on the books of Cowdenbeath, Brechin City, Dundee United and Bradford during a 17- year playing career as a keeper.
He had coaching roles at Brechin, Dunfermline, Hibs and Arbroath. Six years as manager of Brechin saw him lead the club to a Second Division title win in 1990.
