Bringing it all back home

-

The Scottish Homebuilding & Renovating Show, the go-to exhibition for self-builders, home renovators and improvers, is back at the SEC, Glasgow, on June 16 and 17.

The show will be brimming with bright ideas and free advice. Whether you’re midway through a project or don’t know where to start, this is one for the diary.

We asked Michael Holmes, one of the experts from the show, to give us his tips.

Michael says: “We all want our homes to look beautiful and work well, but what does that mean in reality?

“At the Scottish Homebuilding & Renovating Show we’ll be giving advice on lots of topics, including how to create the perfect family bathroom.”

Here are just a few ideas:

Make it child-friendly If you have young children, opt for soft-close toilet seats and always go for a thermostatic shower to reduce the risk of scalding.

Temperature regulators can also be fitted to the taps. A non-slip surface for baths and shower trays removes the risk of falls, while shower screens with curved edges mean no nasty scrapes or bumps.

The shower Avoid a tight shower enclosure in a family bathroom – far better to have either a wetroom-style set-up or a single screen to divide the showering area.

And remember, while fixed overhead showers look great, including an additional handheld shower makes it far easier to hose down children!

Plan for rush hour Twin basins are not just useful in couples’ bathrooms – they also really help during those busy morning rushes, allowing for two lots of teeth to be brushed or faces to be washed at the same time.

Twin showers and double-ended baths are a useful luxury.

Lighting Go for skylights if possible to give more light and feeling of space or, failing that, halogen spots to mimic daylight and light the shower.

Little luxuries Underfloor heating makes stepping out of the bath a pleasure. Great quality taps, installed in the middle of the bath, give that spa feeling. Install a fog-free mirror and include ample storage for all those bottles – and don’t scrimp on the quality of towels.

Bored in the bath? It’s now possible to have radio and television installed in your bathroom.
