McBurnie lets Gerrard know he’s interested
Oli McBurnie has dropped a timely reminder to Steven Gerrard how much he’d love to spearhead his Rangers re-build.
Former England and Liverpool star Gerrard started his new post as the Light Blues manager on Friday.
And he immediately stepped up his hunt for new players, travelling to France to take in England Under21 players in the Toulon tournament.
That wasn’t missed by life- long Rangers fan McBurnie, who is here in Mexico with the senior Scotland side.
The 21-year-old is facing an uncertain future with his club Swansea looking for a manager after sacking Carlos Carvalhal.
McBurnie still has a year on his deal to run at the Liberty Stadium, but finished last season with Barnsley, having been farmed out on loan.
That didn’t stop Alex McLeish giving him his full Scotland debut against Costa Rica at Hampden in March.
McBurnie said: “As a Rangers fan, I hope Steven Gerrard goes there, turns it around and does fantastically well.
“Whether that has anything to do with me or not, who knows?
“But I would love to see him go there and do unbelievably well.
“Me and my brother grew up as massive Rangers fans. I don’t think we had any choice!
“But I am still contracted to Swansea. I have another year left and I need to get back to the club and see what is happening.
“I will speak to Swansea when I come back from this trip with Scotland, see what they want to do and what we want to do and take it from there. “It is a bit up in the air at the minute. “I don’t think the club can let people go or bring people in without a manager being there.
“It is a waiting game. There is no rush. That is the uncertainty of football. “It is exciting in a way, but also its nervy. “I could end up at Swansea, I could end up anywhere in the world but it is exciting.”
McBurnie, born and brought up in Leeds, is a big Gers fan through his Scottish father, Neil.
He was linked with a move to the Govan club in January when Graeme Murty was in charge before going on loan to Barnsley.
He has spoken in the past about his desire to “pull on the jersey”.
