Detective arrest man after white van death
Ayoung dad has died after an alleged hit-and-run.
Steven Campbell, 27, was killed when a van struck him while he was with two friends on Ruthergen’s Burnhill Street.
The incident involved a white Ford transit van, which str uck Mr Campbell around 1.50am, but left his companions – a man and a woman – unharmed.
The father- of- three was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow but died of his injuries.
A 33- year- old man has been arrested in connection with his death, and police have continued to appeal for information about the van involved, saying it was last seen speeding towards Prospecthill Road.
Detectives say the vehicle may have been damaged as it hit Mr Campbell.
Last night forensic officers could be seen working on the road.
Several roads surrounding Burnhill Street were cordoned off, with blocked streets extending to the grounds of local football team Rutherglen Glencairn, which had to postpone their match against Pollok due to the investigation.
Flowers had been laid at the scene with a Celtic scarf among the tributes.
Neighbours spoke of their shock at the incident. One woman whose house overlooks Burnhill Street said: “I heard police sirens around 2am but I didn’t think anything of it at the time, you hear them quite often.
“It is a real tragedy and you feel so sad for the family.”
A local man said: “I heard it was just a young boy, he was apparently dragged by the van. It’s shocking.”
Others took to social media to pay their respects to the young man, known as Stevie to his friends and family.
On Facebook, Yasmin Minhas said: “RIP Stevie Campbell. Hearts breaking for your family and your beautiful kids.”
Another mourner wrote: “RIP Stevie Campbell. Thinking of his three kids. What a horrible world we live in.”
Detective Inspector Kevin Houliston said: “Our inquiry is at an early stage and we are trying to piece together the exact circumstances of what has happened and why.
“A young man has lost his life and a family has been left devastated.
“In particular, I am appealing for information on the Ford Transit van.”
