Gran grilled on orphan Giorgi’s asylum case
The gran of an orphaned schoolboy facing deportation has endured a gruelling interview as part of his bid for asylum.
Giorgi Kakava, 10, has lived in Glasgow for seven years but lost his mum, Sopio, earlier this year.
His father died in his native Georgia after being threatened by gangsters.
Giorgi is now being looked after by his gran Ketino, who this week pleaded with the Home Office to allow her grandson to stay in Scotland.
Solicitor Andrew Bradley of Peter G Farrell Solicitors said: “Ketino has now completed an interview with the Home Office.
“The process lasted several hours.
“She has found herself in a position no grandmother would ever wish to contemplate.
“In the absence of her daughter she was, in effect, pleading with the Home Office for the future of her grandson. She has been touched by the thousands of well-wishers who have offered their support. “
Rev Brian Casey, of Springburn Parish Church in Glasgow, has appealed to the Home Secretary to grant asylum to Giorgi and Ketino.
He has been supporting the family and organised a funeral for Sopio, 35.
Reverend Casey wrote to Home Secretary Sajid Javid yesterday, stating: “I respectfully request that you personally look at this case and grant immediate asylum to Giorgi who knows no other place than Scotland and no other language than English.
“I would ask that you show compassion and see that this boy belongs here and deserves the support of the state.
“Please show that the Conservative Party stands up for human rights.
“I would also ask that you grant permission for Giorgi’s grandmother to stay in order to look after him.
“He has no one here and deserves not to be punished because he is an orphan.”
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Theresa May promised to ask the Home Office to examine the case.
