I’ve been told I have oedema in my legs. What is it?

Oedema is excessive fluid within the tissues which causes swelling of the legs. It can be due to a number of conditions, but treatment depends on the cause. Speak to your GP.

My sister has developed a silly phobia of tomato sauce. It doesn’t affect her – other than she can’t be in the same room as it. Is this worth getting checked out by the GP, or is it harmless?

This could just be a harmless phobia and it doesn’t sound like it needs to be checked out by her GP. If she avoids it as necessary and it will likely settle over time.

I sew a golf ball into the back of my pyjamas so I don’t roll on to my back – it stops my snoring. Is this safe to do? I don’t want to injure my back!

I don’t think there is any increased risk of injury by doing this and if it helps with your snoring then go for it.

I’m pregnant but am experiencing round-the-clock indigestion. Any tips?

This is a common symptom of pregnancy. I would recommend a trial of Gaviscon and watching what you are eating in your diet. If this does not settle your GP can prescribe something a bit stronger for you.

My teenage daughter is keen to use sunbeds. Would it be OK for her to use one on a low power for a very short amount of time?

Sun beds are linked to an increased risk of melanoma and skin problem. I think my advice is to not recommend using sun beds at all – even on low power.

Unfortunately the Doc can’t directly respond to each query, or guarantee a reply.
