Restaurant REVIEW

GIDI GRILL, CITY QUAY, DUNDEE

-

1 LOCATION

In Dundee’s City Quay, it’s easily accessible from the city centre or if you’re travelling from Fife across the Tay Bridge. It’s a nice setting, looking out across the quay, but feels like it should be more bustling. There are shops and restaurants here but it isn’t busy.

2 FIRST IMPRESSIONS

It’s long and narrow and feels cosy. It’s a sunny evening but you could imagine hiding from bad weather in here. You can see the chefs at work and there’s music playing but not too loudly.

3 SERVICE

Friendly enough. Not the most efficient but not completely out of order either. Gidi Grill hasn’t been open long when we visit – we put it down to teething troubles.

4 MENU

It’s a grill restaurant – see what they did there with the name? – so think chicken, steaks and fish cooked over a Josper charcoal grill. There are lots of sides and sauces, too, and a small but good selection of puddings.

5 TASTE

There are three of us dining and one has sea bass, one has pork chop with barbecue sauce and one has jerk chicken fillet. We order a selection of sides for sharing, including sweet potato fries, corn on the cob and onion rings. All of us are of the same opinion. It’s good – we eat it – but none of us is bowled over.

6 AMBIENCE

Relaxed and chilled out. It’s lovely sitting by the window looking out over the water.

7 PRICE

Three main courses with sides and sauces, three puddings, three soft drinks and three coffees came to just over £70. About standard city-centre prices.

8 SOMETHING SPECIAL

The Caribbean rum cake, caramel sauce and ice cream is a definite winner.

9 TOILET

Clean and perfectly acceptable.

10 VERDICT

A nice menu, especially if you love a steak or chicken. It’s a great setting, the food is good but not great and it’s something a bit different for Dundee. 14/20
