I’m so shocked to be told that I have arthritis...I’m only 41

-

Dear Maggie

I’m 41 and have just been told by my doctor that I probably have arthritis. I was so shocked by this information that I didn’t think to ask any further questions or query the purpose of the x-rays and blood test that he ordered for me.

I’ve got so many questions and worries, but my GP is always so busy and I just don’t know who else to turn to for advice. It all seems so unfair and surely I’m too young for arthritis anyway?

Maggie says

I know you must be feeling a bit despondent about this diagnosis. It would come as a shock and when that happens, our mind goes into overdrive and we forget to calmly ask the questions and get the information we need.

I suggest you make another appointment with your GP and write down the questions you want answered.

He will understand that you were shocked by the diagnosis and I’m sure he will be happy to give you some answers.

Arthritis is usually a condition which affects older people – but it can happen at any age. It causes wear and tear of the joints and is painful.

For some people, gentle exercise and swimming helps.

It’s important that you acknowledge the condition and find out more about it. Being informed about it and taking a positive attitude to helping yourself stay fit and healthy is the best way to minimise the problem. I wish you well.
