The partner of a Scots dad who died after being beaten around the head with a cricket bat has paid an emotional tribute to him, saying he was “perfect” for her.

Derek Whyteside, 42, of Telford, Shropshire was placed in an induced coma after the assault in the street on Monday, around a mile from his home.

He died two days later in hospital.

His partner Michelle Wilson said he was attacked after going out to try and find his stepchildren’s stolen bicycles. Yesterday in a message posted on social media, she thanked him for “nearly nine years of his life he gave to me and the kids.”

She said: “Don’t get me wrong, he wasn’t perfect. But he was perfect for me. We had laughter, we had tears but most of all my darling made me feel safe. Sleep tight, one day I will meet you again.”

Six people were arrested in relation to Mr Whyteside’s death.

A 16-year-old boy has appeared before magistrates charged with murder.

He appeared at Kidderminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday and is due to appear in court again tomorrow.

Two men arrested in connection with the incident have been released on bail, while a woman and two teenage boys have been released while police inquiries continue.

It is believed Mr Whyteside’s father Alan, 68, has flown from Scotland to be with family members.
