Sweet taste and even sweeter memories

£25 STAR LETTER

-

I never thought buying a box of strawberries made in Angus from my local Co-op could spark such sweet memories.

I was born in 1937, in a tenement. My mum had six bairns in two rooms, so berry and tattie picking helped pay for school clothes.

I remember picking raspberries not far from Montrose. I can’t remember picking any strawberries but the box I bought in the shop was sweet, and so were the memories of Montrose the berries brought back.

I’m a mum of five, grandma to 13, and great-grandma to a few more. I lost my husband six years ago.

Dial and error

My sister, 84, is in a care home and I have been trying to help her only son, who lives in California, with matters relating to his mother.

I was advised to call Care Information Scotland for help regarding my sister.

Imagine my surprise when a recorded message told me that, as I did not have a Scottish number, they would not answer my call.

Does the Scottish Government not realise that some Scots live in other countries and might actually need to get in touch about a loved one living in Scotland?

I dialled the number again using a mobile and my call was answered right away. Moira Slider, Whitley Bay

£200m no-go

I wholeheartedly agree with your columnist Donald MacLeod. Spend £200m on Glasgow School of Art? No way!

Many families on low incomes are struggling to feed their children. Universal credit is causing no end of worry to many.

Yes, by all means, help businesses on Sauchiehall Street to rebuild.

Dear sister

In response to Thomas Brown’s letter, I was in weekly handwritten correspondence with my sister for more than 70 years, from when she joined the Wrens in 1946, and her subsequent marriage and residence in England, until her death last year.

Her granddaughter, on learning this, expressed a wish to exchange letters, and we are now in regular correspondence, though still resorting to email for urgent news. Jessie Gemmell, via email

System failure

I feel so much sympathy for June Martin, left suicidal after her two children were murdered, and who has lost her lifeline benefits ( The Sunday Post, June 24). She is in my prayers and thoughts. June Fleming, Musselburgh

Dressing down

Re: changing the name of salad cream to sandwich cream: I think it’s just another marketing ploy.

Some years ago I recall Heinz saying it intended to stop making salad cream altogether.

Surprise, surprise: sales escalated and it is still being manufactured.

A great read

I live in England and, for the first time, saw your paper on sale in my newsagent. I thought I would give it a look and, I must say, I enjoyed reading it very much. I will buy it again if I see it.
