Coffee shop chain Starbucks is to charge 5p for paper cups and phase out plastic straws. Are we doing enough to reduce plastics?
A great idea, but why take two years to eliminate plastic straws? Do it now!
Judi Martin, Aberdeenshire This is a drop in the ocean. I won’t carry a cup around with me and won’t be using Starbucks.
Allison Scotland, Roxburghshire The less plastic we use, the better. There is not enough fuss made about the pollution caused, especially microbes.
Hamilton Mclean, Harwood Starbucks charge too much anyway so customers wouldn’t mind paying another 5p.
Gary Hopton, Fife Good idea, but some disabled people need the plastic straws, as paper ones break up too quickly sometimes.
Joan Fordyce, Forfar Not enough is being done. Just look at all the unnecessary packaging used in supermarkets.
Irene Allison, Airdrie Councils make it difficult to recycle so people just put everything in landfill.
Ronald James, Angus It’s a good idea but issuing and charging for paper cups won’t stop litter.
James Walker, Glenrothes I would definitely use my own cup and think they can go further. Why not use reusable cups for cold drinks, too?
Fiona Reid, Forfar Who would bring their own cup? It’s fine for the office workers but often a cuppa is an impromptu decision. But we have to start somewhere. Plastic should be outlawed within 20 years.
Irene Thomson, Perth It’s a case of too much fuss and not enough action.
