QUIET DAY WITH BALL FOR ENGLAND’S RETURNEE

-

Stokes’ return to Test cricket came in the same week he was cleared of affray at Bristol Crown Court. Here’s how his day panned out.

1101 – First touch of the ball, fielding the third delivery of the day at point off James Anderson. .

1137 – Joe Root gets his premier all-rounder into the attack early. The crowd reception is minimal, and Stokes begins with a tame long-hop to KL Rahul, pulled for a single. The opening over costs seven runs.

1150 – Body contact as Stokes tries to stop a sharp single off his own bowling – but as Dhawan makes his ground a polite sidestep ensures no barging match.

1208 – Dhawan edges Stokes’ second delivery just short of Keaton Jennings at third slip. It is the closest England have come to a breakthrough.

1218 – Rahul edges Stokes high over the slips to take India to 60 for none, their highest stand for any wicket so far in this series.

1245 – Root decides Stokes’ work is done for the morning following a spell of 7-0-29-0.

1418 – Stokes is back in the attack.

1435 – Root replaces Stokes with Adil Rashid after a two-over spell costing 16 runs.

1528 – His third spell starts, from the Radcliffe Road end this time. In two overs to tea, his efforts bear no fruit.

1649 – Low point of the evening session for Stokes, when he misfields off Broad in the covers to allow Rahane two more runs.

1737 – Stokes has a fourth spell, to no avail, but he does have a say in proceedings when catches Kohli in the slips.

His 15 overs yield 0-54.
