Pep delighted with Mendy’s return to action

Benjamin Mendy was the only Manchester City player to return from Russia this summer with a World Cup winner’s medal. But while he was part of the French squad that conquered the world, it’s now back to pleasing the hardest task master in football – Pep Guardiola. Mendy arrived last summer from Monaco for £50 million and made a bright start to his City career. But his debut season was ruined by a cruciate knee ligament injury last September. He returned in time for a few cameo appearances at the back end of the campaign as well as winning his place on the plane with France. Now it’s time to establish himself in City’s team and to take on board Guardiola’s advice. The City manager was quick to point out after last Sunday’s 2-0 win at Arsenal that his left-back needed to spend less time on social media and more time on his football. But as they gear up for their opening home game of the season at home to Huddersfield this lunchtime, Guardiola is thrilled to have Mendy back in his plans. “Of course, it’s good,” he says. “Last year Benjamin played well, but then it is not easy after being injured for a year. Then at the World Cup, he played one game and didn’t play after that. “But he gives us an extra dimension. It is good that he is back and can play and can regularly train for weeks and weeks. Benjamin is a nice person and he has a big heart. It’s great to have guys who make the others laugh and who create a good atmosphere.” As Mendy gets back to full speed, one player missing out is Kevin De Bruyne after being ruled out for three months with a knee injury. But De Bruyne’s absence might mean more opportunities for 18-year-old prospect Phil Foden to get game time, and Guardiola insists the teenager is ready. “Now Phil is part of the team,” he adds. “When I believe he has to play, he plays. All I can say is that I’m so delighted the way he trains every single day. He trains like a professional and with the way he improves, he has the same chances as the other guys. “He looks tiny and skinny, but he is strong. And this season he is stronger than last season. But give him time. In two or three seasons, he will be more and more stronger than he is now.”
