Belfast is home for Superman’s grandad

AS the star of a big new American network show, Cameron Cuffe might have expected to be soaking up the sunshine of Los Angeles. Instead, the young Londoner has had to travel no further than Belfast. Like Game Of Thrones, filming for Superman prequel Krypton is done in the city. “The vast majority of the cast are either English or Irish,” 25-year-old Cameron told iN10. “It’s amazing how much global TV is now made in the UK and we should be really proud of that.” Cameron plays Seg-El, grandfather of Superman, in the 10-part drama which has just started on E4. It is set on the planet Krypton some 200 years before Superman’s birth and has gone down so well, Cameron is about to start filming a second series. Although it’s filmed here, Krypton is a Warner Brothers project and Cameron was invited to the famous Hollywood studios. “I was screen testing there and it was pretty spectacular,” admits the affable actor. “There is so much history and to be able to walk on to that lot was amazing. “I grew up as a film fan and to just be there where so many iconic movies have been shot was a dream come true.” Cameron appeared in British period drama The Halcyon and also had a small part in US series Time After Time. But he admits Krypton is his big break and could open other doors for him. He was already a fan of the famous Superman franchise and says he’s thrilled to be a part of it, even though he had to hit the gym to look the part for the flying sequences. “When you’re a blood relative of the Man Of Steel, there are certain expectations so I did have to train a lot,” laughs Cameron. Krypton, E4, today, 9pm.
