Life’s a barrel of laughs for Sandi

She’s part of the lighthearted double act on The Great British Bake Off and QI host Sandi Toksvig says being a funny lady follows her around. “People say to my family, ‘It must be such fun living with Sandi’ and they’ll go, ‘Erm, yes’,” says Sandi. “But I do think life is funny. “Even at a funeral you’ll find something that will make you smile. It’s what makes us as human beings. “It’s what keeps us alive and it’s one of the great capacities the British have. I love how much people make me laugh in everyday life.” Sandi admits taking over as host means she has had to muck around less than she did as a panellist. But her long association means she knew the rhythm and flow. She has also picked up some handy life hacks along the way. “For example, if you’ve got AAA batteries and what you really need are AA batteries then you can put the smaller ones in the remote control. “Fill up the rest of the space with rolled up aluminium foil and they’ll work just the same.” QI’s return means double duties for Sandi at the moment alongside her GBBO co-presenting stint with Noel Fielding and judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith. With all the clever chat on QI, Sandi says that as well as the comic expectations, people do reckon that she’s going to be super-smart when they meet her. “Yes, they expect me to know everything. “Sometimes on a train I’ll get, ‘You’ll know this’ but, honestly, for a clever person, as my wife will tell you, I have a big streak of stupid. “She’ll say to me, ‘Take your sweater off, you’re too hot’ and I’ll think, ‘Yes I am, so no wonder I don’t feel well!’” QI, BBC2, Mon, 10pm.
