Harrison leaves it late to rescue leaders Leeds

- By Mike Rimmer sport@sundaypost.com

Almost a year to the day from their last visit to The Den, Leeds United travelled to Millwall top of the Championship again, and history came close to repeating itself. When they lost this fixture 1-0 last season, it burst their bubble and began their slow descent into mid-table mediocrity and the omens were not good for them for much of this game. Shorn of the attacking threats of Kemar Roofe and Pablo Hernandez, Marcelo Bielsa’s side struggled for the type of cohesion up front that had taken them to the top of the table. And when Jed Wallace put the Lions in front after 55 minutes, it was looking as if this would be yet another fruitless trip to south London. But the visitors managed to rally this time around and Jack Harrison produced a moment of quality late on to maintain their unbeaten start and suggest things really are different this time. Sheffield Wednesday came back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Stoke City. Two first-half goals from Benik Afobe put the visitors in control, but Marco Matias pulled a goal back before the interval, with Barry Bannan grabbing an equaliser late on. Derby manager Frank Lampard was sent to the stands as his 10 men were deservedly beaten 1-0 by Rotherham. Both Lampard and Tom Lawrence were dismissed in the second half, as the Rams were outclassed in South Yorkshire. Ryan Manning’s first goal for the club proved to be the difference. Steve McClaren earned his first away win as QPR boss as a traumatic week for hosts Bolton ended in a 2-1 defeat at the University of Bolton Stadium. Luke Freeman put the Londoners in front after 25 minutes and then created Rangers’ second for Eberechi Eze in the 56th minute. Substitute Josh Magennis pulled a goal back. Jarrod Bowen and Jackson Irvine were on target as Hull City beat winless Ipswich Town 2-0 at the KCOM Stadium. Nigel Adkins’ hosts led within the opening three minutes of the match when Bowen scooped the ball over Ipswich goalkeeper Dean Gerken. Substitute Irvine wrapped up a big three points for Hull on 89 minutes, squeezing the ball beyond Gerken. Brentford climbed to second with a convincing 2-0 win over 10-man Wigan. Goals in each half from Neal Maupay were enough to secure the Bees maximum points. Wigan’s Sam Morsy was sent off for a dangerous, late shoulder barge to Yoann Barbet’s head. Leandro Bacuna was Reading’s match-winner as they beat fellow strugglers Preston 3-2 at Deepdale. Striker Sam Baldock gave the visitors a the lead, before Daniel Johnson levelled matters. Tiago Ilori netted his first Reading goal to put the Royals in front again, only for Callum Robinson to equalise. Bacuna then slotted home to give the Royals the win.
