Adams helps Monk get one over on Leeds

- By Richard Smith sport@sundaypost.com

Leeds’ unbeaten start to the league season came to a halt as former United boss Garry Monk inspired Birmingham to a 2-1 victory at Elland Road. The 39-year-old, who spent the 2016/17 season in charge of the Whites, had endured a miserable return to his old club last term, suffering a 2-1 defeat as Middlesbrough boss. Che Adams’ brace secured the Blues their first win of the campaign at the ninth attempt. Ezgjan Alioski pulled a goal back for leaders Leeds late on. Sheffield United climbed to fourth after a thrilling 3-2 win over bottom of the table Preston at Bramall Lane. A late winner from David McGoldrick saw United take all three points after his side had let a two-goal lead slip late in the game. Billy Sharp opened the scoring, before Chris Basham’s header found the top corner. Preston drew level with two goals in two minutes as Daniel Johnson’s shot was matched moments later by Callum Robinson. Sheffield Wednesday consigned Aston Villa to their first home defeat of the season. The visitors took the lead through Marco Matias, before John McGinn drew the scores level with a stunning volley, Steven Fletcher’s header sealing the win. Derby sank Brentford 3-1 at Pride Park and climbed back into the top six. Brentford took an early lead via Henrik Dalsgaard’s header, but goals before the break from Harry Wilson, David Nugent and Mason Mount ensured the points went to the home side. West Brom striker Dwight Gayle continued his red-hot run of form to help secure a 2-0 win against Millwall at The Hawthorns. Gayle made it four goals in four games when he broke the deadlock, with Kieran Gibbs sealing Albion’s success. Reading secured their first points at home in the league with a 3-0 win over Hull City. Sam Baldock, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and Andy Yiadom netted for the hosts, who lost John O’Shea to a red card. Blackburn punished Stoke’s defensive failings to win 3-2, despite a spirited comeback by Gary Rowett’s side that saw Saido Berahino miss a late penalty. Rovers led 3-0 through Bradley Dack, Danny Graham and Harrison Reed. But Berahino and Tom Ince reduced the arrears, before the former’s missed penalty. Ten-man Bolton held Ipswich 0-0, despite having Marc Wilson sent off, while Lewis Grabban’s late penalty saw Nottingham Forest grind out a 1-0 win over Rotherham.
