WILL SPIDERS HAVE TO GO PRO?

Queen’s Park’s 151-year-old amateur values of “Ludere Causa Ludendi” – to play for the sake of playing – are set to come under scrutiny to ensure they remain a competitive senior side following the news of their enforced move to Lesser Hampden. Queen’s will re-locate to what is presently their training headquarters in two years’ time after the SFA purchased the club’s Hampden ground for £5.1m. With the lure of playing at the National Stadium (below) gone, there are concerns over their ability to attract players, who are willing to play only for the joy of playing, as opposed to being paid elsewhere. With the pyramid trap-door in place, Queen’s are aware one poor season could see them drop out of senior football. These concerns were aired in a meeting between the club’s committee and members. One attendee advised: “Our amateur status is something that will have to be looked at. It is not something anyone really wants to happen, but a review will take place before 2020. “That review will include looking at whether Queen’s Park should have the option to have professional players.” “If the club sticks to its amateur status and finds itself at the bottom of League 2 halfway through a season, it could be too late to change. “It is also a question of whether that is a price worth paying for change.”
