HOME SIDE REGAIN THE UPPER HAND

-

India regained control of the second Test against the West Indies in Hyderabad yesterday, as Ajinkya Rahane and Rishabh Pant each hit unbeaten half-centuries. Roston Chase had made 106, after resuming on 98, for a first Test century outside the Caribbean and fourth of his career as the tourists finished 311 all out in the morning session. Umesh Yadav returned career-best figures of six for 88, while Kuldeep Yadav picked up three wickets and Ravi Ashwin one. West Indies captain Jason Holder then took two wickets – including that of India skipper Virat Kohli lbw for 45 – to leave the hosts’ reply at a concerning 162 for four. Teenage opener Prithvi Shaw again shone with the bat. Having made a sparkling century on debut, he followed it up with a 53-ball 70 before chipping to cover. However, it did give the hosts a good start, and after the departure of Kohli, Rahane and Pant combined to put India on 308 for four and with the prospect of building a big lead in the first innings. Rahane will resume at 75, having reached a 15th test half-century, while the free-scoring Pant struck 10 fours and two over the ropes in his typically aggressive 85.
