ANGLING

-

With the water temperature now much colder, fly life has diminished and it’s time again to get fishing deep and slow with some darker-coloured patterns. The Ersatz Gold fits the bill nicely.

It is tied on a size 6-10 Kamasan B170 hook, fitted with a gold bead, using black tying thread.

The tail is black marabou and the body black Fritz – a simple, but deadly, autumn rainbow fly.

As usual a number of biggies have been featuring in the recent catches at the Woodburn Trout Fishery, near Milton of Campsie.

John Shaw, from Kilsyth, included a 10lb 8oz rainbow in his four fish taken on catchand-release. Billy Alton from Kirkintilloch had three for 16lb 2oz, Ian Anderson had eight on C&R including fish of 10lb and 8lb, Craig Brown took 11 on C&R – best 7lb – and John Wilson from Glasgow had two C&R – best 6lb.

Despite it being quiet recently, those who turned out at East Lothian’s Markle Fishery were well rewarded with some fine specimens of fish.

Steven Hearty from Glasgow had a 6lb 8oz brown trout on a lure, Paul Thorburn (Musselburgh) took a brace weighing 10lb – best fish 8lb on a small Buzzer and John Daly from Edinburgh used a lure to catch a fine rainbow of 9lb.
