Man dies after recovery truck topples while pulling car out

-

A man died early yesterday during the recovery of a car in treacherous road conditions in Aberdeenshire.

Photographs taken at the scene of the accident show an overturned recovery vehicle at the side of a steep ditch.

The recovery truck was attempting to lift out a silver car which had left the road when it appears to have toppled onto its side.

It is not known whether the dead man was the driver of the truck, or of the stranded car.

Last night, police would only say that a man had lost his life during the recovery of a vehicle on the B999 near Udny Station.

Police Scotland have confirmed that officials from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) are carrying out an investigation to establish what happened.

The road, north of Pitmedden, remained closed for several hours. Police Scotland said: “We can confirm a man sadly died during the recovery of a vehicle. His next of kin have been informed.

“Inquiries are ongoing to establish the full set of circumstances and officers are working closely with the HSE.”

Motorists had reported icy conditions early in the morning.

Health and Safety Executive, a government body, are routinely called in when an accident at a workplace leads to the loss of life.

Employers who flout strict laws on the protection of workers can face prosecution.

Meanwhile, in Wales, three teenagers died in a two-car crash in Denbighshire.

Denbigh mayor Catherine Jones said the community is “devastated and grieving” after the accident.
