GHOSTLY GOINGS ON

- By Murray Scougall

10 of the best spook-tacular Halloween days out.

GlasGLOW

Botanic Gardens, Glasgow, until Nov 11

THINK of Halloween and witches in black, candlelit pumpkins and shadowy figures all come to mind.

But in Glasgow, this year’s Halloween celebrations will be no dull, Gothic affair.

Beginning last night, the Botanic Gardens in the West End has had a £500,000 makeover for what is being dubbed a spectacular sound and light show.

The outdoor experience, which will take about 90 minutes to walk around, has been described as “Spielbergesque with a nod to ’80s nostalgia” and “Stranger Things meets Game Of Thrones”. It has certainly caught the public’s imagination. Tickets sold so well that an extra seven nights have been added.

Kibble Palace is just one of the familiar attractions in the park that will be bathed in an immersive landscape of light and sound.

The man behind the event is Oli Norman, CEO of itison and a resident of the West End.

He says he had the idea for GlasGLOW more than a decade ago, and has gathered a world-class lighting and technical team to bring it to life.

Spectacular autumn light shows are becoming increasingly popular, with events all around Scotland as the nights draw in and the leaves crinkle on the ground.

One of the most enduringly popular is The Enchanted Forest, which is held in Faskally Woods near Pitlochry until November 4.

Then there is the Woodland Experiences, which are to be held in the private woodlands of North Ballochruin Farm in Balfron, near Loch Lomond, next month.

Illuminight at Dean Castle Country Park in Kilmarnock, which is on until November 18, is another favourite.

Edinburgh is lit up with Christmas at the Botanics for five weeks and the giant advent calendar at General Register House in the city projects a different image on to the side of the building in the build-up to December 25.

But before we become full of the Christmas spirit, we take a look at some of the other types of spirits that will be making themselves known to brave souls around the country this Halloween week.
