Cool Campbell gives Tigers a needed boost

-

Fraizer Campbell scored his second goal in as many games as struggling Hull City beat promotion contenders West Brom 1-0 at the KCOM Stadium.

The three points were well deserved by Hull who defended in numbers, but also threatened a visiting team lacking in ideas.

Campbell settled the issue with a composed finish near the end of the first half after a header from Jackson Irvine came back off the crossbar.

Norwich City continued their winning run as a secondhalf flurry of goals inflicted a 4-0 defeat upon Sheffield Wednesday.

Teemu Pukki scored twice, while Emi Buendia and substitute Dennis Srbeny also got in on the act.

Lewis Grabban scored his 10th goal in 11 league appearances to help Nottingham Forest knock Sheffield United off the top of the table with a 1-0 win at the City Ground.

The striker’s flicked header in the 69th minute was enough to decide a closely contested affair between two sides with promotion aspirations.

Bradley Dack marked his 50th league start for Blackburn by scoring a late penalty to give Rovers a 1-0 win over QPR.

Struggling Reading shrugged off their poor recent league form to clinch a much-needed 3-2 home win over Bristol City.

They went ahead early on through striker Yakou Meite, but City drew level from Marlon Pack’s firm finish.

In first-half stoppage time, Liam Kelly restored Reading’s advantage – only for Josh Brownhill to swiftly cancel it out before the break. But midfielder Leandro Bacuna pounced midway through the second half to give the home side victory.

Derby County staged a stirring second-half comeback at Pride Park to end Birmingham City’s unbeaten record.

The Blues had not lost since August and led through Lukas Jutkiewicz’s eighth goal in seven games at the interval, but they were blown away after the break. Mason Bennett scored his first league goal for five years, Harry Wilson fired in a free-kick, before Jack Marriott sealed it.

Brentford ended a nine-game winless run with a hardfought 2-0 derby success over Millwall thanks to secondhalf goals from Sergi Canos and Ollie Watkins.

Elsewhere, two second-half penalties from substitute Ryan Manning completed an incredible turnaround as Rotherham defeated Swansea City, who led after 25 minutes through Oliver McBurnie, 2-1.

Paul Gallagher enjoyed an eventful afternoon as Preston came from behind to draw 1-1 with Ipswich.

The striker stepped off the bench in the 71st minute and, within five minutes, he had scored his side’s equaliser and then pulled on the goalkeeping gloves.

Gallagher’s free-kick, his first and only touch as an outfield player, cancelled out Freddie Sears’ penalty – but Chris Maxwell almost immediately collected a second yellow card, leaving Gallagher to step between the sticks for the final 15 minutes.
