I’ve started using foam earplugs at night so I don’t hear passing traffic. Can these cause infections?

They can if they’re not regularly changed and there’s a build-up of wax and bacteria. I would suggest changing them frequently and if the skin in the ears gets itchy stop using them for while. Alternatively you could try hypoallergenic or even wax plugs which can be cleaned regularly.

I have cervical spondylitis. What is it?

This is an inflammatory arthritis of the spine with no known cause. There are medications which can help reduce the inflammation and symptoms.

When I breathe in through my nostrils, it sounds like snoring. It almost feels like something is trapped.

As you breathe in through the nose the pressure will cause your nostrils to narrow causing friction. This can sound much like snoring does in the throat.

I’ve always bitten my nails – but since I’m nearly 70 I’d better stop! Do you have any tips?

Why stop now? A manicure and some nice varnish may help remove the temptation to bite your nails – if you like nail polish that is. Otherwise, if you still wish to stop, the nastytasting nail paints can be quite a deterrent.

I have a sore gland in my left cheek. It’s swollen and painful. Is this one for the GP?

It would certainly be worth getting checked out. The parotid salivary gland sits in the cheek just in front of the ear. If there is a blocked salivary duct then sometimes this gland can become swollen and tender. Your doctor can check this out for you.

Unfortunately the Doc can’t directly respond to each query, or guarantee a reply. When in doubt contact your own GP
