‘Proud’ Santo creates history for Wanderers

-

Wolverhampton Wanderers have won three straight top-flight matches for the first time in almost 40 years following their 2-0 win over Bournemouth.

An early goal from Raul Jimenez and a late strike by substitute Ivan Cavaleiro inflicted a sixth defeat in seven league games on Bournemouth, who struggled to create chances.

“I am very proud for the boys,” said Wolves head coach Nuno Espirito Santo.

“They achieve it with hard work and I am happy for the fans too as we achieve something together that is very special in the most difficult competition in the world, so we have to be very proud.”

Crystal Palace secured their first league victory without Wilfried Zaha in over two years as Luka Milivojevic’s outstanding finish inspired them to overcome Leicester 1-0.

With Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Andros Townsend exchanging passes near the Leicester penalty area as they pursued a target, Townsend found Milivojevic, who in turn unexpectedly looked up and brilliantly bent the ball from 25 yards just inside the far right post and beyond Kasper Schmeichel’s fingertips.

Christian Eriksen struck an injury-time winner to end Tottenham’s frustration against Burnley and earn a 1-0 win.

Spurs looked like enduring a disappointing comedown from their midweek high in Barcelona as they struggled to break the Clarets down at Wembley.

But Eriksen, introduced from the bench, won it in the first minute of time added on when he coolly clipped home.

Gerard Deulofeu starred as Watford withstood a late rally from Cardiff to end a sixmatch winless run with a 3-2 victory at Vicarage Road.

The Hornets led 3-0 after 68 minutes after Deulofeu’s solo strike and curling efforts from Jose Holebas and Domingos Quina.

But the Bluebirds were grateful for goalkeeper Neil Etheridge’s display and refused to submit, scoring two goals in three minutes to set up a nervous finale.

Junior Hoilett struck from 25 yards after 80 minutes and Bobby Reid scrambled in a second soon afterwards, but Watford held on to win. Cardiff now have one point from their last 10 league away games.

Fulham’s chaotic defending cost them again as in-form West Ham roared to a fourth straight victory.

The Cottagers remain the only team in England without a clean sheet this season after goals from Robert Snodgrass and Michail Antonio gave the visitors a 2-0 win and lifted them to ninth.

New Fulham manager Claudio Ranieri knows he needs to plug the leaks, but on this evidence he has a lots of work still to do, with his side still rooted to the foot of the table.
