Andy: Sam’s the man to fire Dons up table

Andy Considine believes striker Sam Cosgrove can become the man that fires Aberdeen up the table.

The big Englishman scored his second goal in two games to give the Dons a victory at St Mirren yesterday.

He really toiled to hit the net during his early days at Pittodrie, but Considine has faith in his team-mate to make the fans forget about Adam Rooney.

He reacted quickly to score when the defender’s header came back off the bar yesterday.

“It’s massive for Sam to be scoring now,” said Considine.

“He has been brilliant since coming, he gives us something that Rooney gave us – that kind of target man, he holds the ball up well.

“And he’s lightning quick as well. For a striker, scoring goals is the main confidence for him.

“It’s great that he was on his toes once the ball bounced off the bar he was there to nod it in.

“Like him and Stevie May, we’re desperate for him to get on the scoresheet.

“Stevie had another good chance. He is getting into great positions and hopefully on Tuesday against Dundee he can put them away.

“When you come to places like this and games where we’re not playing just too well, our out ball is Sam at times.

“He can get us up the pitch, win us fouls when under a bit of pressure. He’s a massive player for us.

“He’s making progress. The more games he plays, the confidence will build. He’s a young lad whose career is all in front of him.

“This is the best place for him to be – fantastic coaches, great team, great bunch of boys and we all want the best for him.’

Considine hopes Aberdeen are now on the way up again after a sticky start to the season.

He said: “Ideally the aim is to go higher. It’s been one of the most inconsistent starts we’ve had for a number of years.

“We’ve just picked up results but we knew December was massive for us. Four more games to go and if we can pick up four more good results we will be sitting second or third. That will put us in a good position.”

Dons boss Derek McInnes echoed Considine’s hopes for 22-year-old Cosgrove to make an increasing contribution to Aberdeen’s future.

He said: “Goals give strikers that added confidence.

“His game is in a good place at the minute. We want him to be relevant in the opposition box and him and May getting on the scoresheet will do them no harm.”
