The Sunday Post (Newcastle)

The worst TV format ...ever. Not sogreat

- THIS WEEK’S TV

▼ THE GREATEST CHOCOLATE ADS OF ALL TIME (CHANNEL 5)

“Greatest”. That’s one of Channel 5’s favourite words.

The others are “favourite” and “horribly wrong”.

If you don’t know what I’m on about, here’s a selection of the channel’s output over the last couple of years.

Britain’s Favourite Sweets, Britain’s Favourite Chocolate Bar, Greatest 80s Movies, Greatest Ever Animated Movies, Greatest Ever Celebrity Wind-Ups Ever (that’s right, two evers), When Christmas Goes Horribly Wrong, When Live News Goes Horribly Wrong, When Gameshows Go Horribly Wrong, When Television Goes Horribly Wrong.

Well, they certainly got that last one right.

Five’s latest prime-time offering on Sunday was a programme about old chocolate adverts. A show about adverts, interspersed by adverts, with added content coming in the form of celebs who can now only get work in adverts. Or as a Channel 5 talking head.

Be grateful for small mercies, because The Greatest Chocolate Ads Of All Time only lasted 90 minutes. Usually this format can carry on into the wee hours, manna from heaven for insomniacs, car crash TV for the rest of us. Surely enough is enough? Alas, no, a couple of hours after this went off, there was a repeat of When Demolitions Go Wrong. What? Not Horribly?

▼ TRUE DETECTIVE (SKY ATLANTIC)

More than three years have passed since the misjudged second season of the crime drama, almost enough time to forget the awful performance Vince Vaughn turned in.

No such issues with this season’s lead, Mahershala Ali, who is outstanding playing Detective Wayne Hays across three different decades, as the show returns to form.
