Unspeakable: The Things We Cannot Say Harriet Shawcross, Canongate £14.99
As a teenager, Shawcross stopped speaking for almost a year. In adulthood, she became fascinated by the limits of language.
Here she explores what makes us silent, from the aftermath of natural disaster to the taboo of coming out.
A heady mix of memoir, history, literary criticism and journalism. OUR VERDICT 8/10
Lab Rats: How Silicon Valley Made Work Miserable Dan Lyons, Atlantic, £16.99
Lyons puts what we’ve taken from Silicon Valley under the microscope.
From personality tests, teambuilding exercises, and forced fun to hot-desking and diminishing job security, he asks what can be done to turn things around.
Funny and frightening. OUR VERDICT 9/10
Out Of The Woods Luke Turner, Weidenfeld & Nicolson, £16.99
Turner, a founder of music website The Quietus, focuses in this debut on his fascination with Epping Forest.
The woods serve as a distraction from his break-up and his struggle with bisexuality.
He also speaks bravely of the sex abuse he suffered as a teen, but for all its promise this narrative is a little slow and meandering. OUR VERDICT 8/10
