Remainers to renew calls for People’s Vote
Politicians will reignite their campaign for a second referendum on Brexit tomorrow.
A cross-party group of MPs and MSPs will meet in Edinburgh to renew calls for another vote.
If Theresa May’s agreed deal fails to win backing, many observers believe the Prime Minister is likely to attempt to postpone Brexit rather than crash out on March 29 with no deal in place.
However, cross-party representatives, including SNP MP Joanna Cherry, Green MSP Andy Wightman, Liberal Democrat MP Christine Jardine and Labour MSP Kezia Dugdale, will tomorrow insist a so-called People’s Vote is the best way forward.
Kerry Buist, director of the Scotland for a People’s Vote campaign, said: “It is clearer than ever the House of Commons doesn’t want the Prime Minister’s deal, there is no alternative deal on offer, and it won’t countenance a no-deal Brexit. In these circumstances, the only option left standing will be to refer the issue back to the public.”
After Paul Sweeney broke ranks last week, a majority of Scottish Labour MPs – four out of seven – now back some form of new vote.
Mr Sweeney, shadow Scotland minister, said he wanted a “ratification referendum” to give the people a “final say”.
The Scottish Conservatives said: “The only substantial deal on the table, which avoids no deal and would deliver an orderly Brexit, is the Prime Minister’s plan or something like it.
“The UK voted to leave the EU in 2016. Any way forward must respect that.”
