Canny Scots are raking in extra cash by renting out storage space in their spare rooms, attics, garages and wardrobes.

Online service Stashbee is described as the Airbnb of storage.

The London-based sharing platform matches people with space to spare and people with things to store.

Stashbee has just launched outside of the capital and the site is

now featuring listings in Scotland’s cities. In Edinburgh, a woman is offering part of her basement for up to £131.99 a month and another user is advertising storage space in a spare room for up to £52.99.

A garden shed in Glasgow is going for £263.99 a month and someone’s basement is available from £20.99.

A mum of two from north Glasgow is renting out the garage at the family home to a stranger via Stashbee.

She has also listed space in a large storage cupboard.

“We rarely use the garage so we rent it to a very nice man from the other side of the city who stores his kit car with us,” she said. According to Stashbee, a single garage in Glasgow can typically rent for about £85 a month.

Stashbee co-founders David Mantle and Anthony Paine started the business in 2016. They hit on the idea after being inspired by their own experiences.

“We both realised there was a need for affordable local storage and the rise of the sharing economy could provide the solution.

“Security is important to us and we ID check everyone who uses us,” said David.

The self-storage business has boomed in recent years and is estimated to be worth more than £750 million a year in the UK.
