Stability can be key to any Saints success

Ryan Flynn believes St Mirren will be successful because they’ve gone back to the future.

The midfielder admits last season was the most-unsettled spell he has experienced during 14 years in football.

But the arrival of Jim Goodwin as manager has restored calm at the Simple Digital Arena.

Former boss Oran Kearney kept Saints in the top flight after beating Dundee United in the relegation play-off, but that was done by bringing in a host of loan players.

Flynn, 30, said: “I thought last season was a tough one and, hopefully, it’s not the same rollercoaster this time.

“The amount of change that happened was incredible. It was never settled.

“When I first came in the door – in January, 2018, under Jack Ross – everything was just so settled.

“Last season it felt like you were introducing yourself to new players all the time.

“This season I think it will be a lot more settled.

“The new manager has come in and improved the organisation.

“There is a different feel about the place. It’s night and day.

“Boys that are coming in are on twoyear deals and things like that.

“I never think in football it’s good to be chopping and changing.

“Sometimes there are bad results and people change things too quickly, with players in and out.

“I think the teams that do well have normally been together over a long period of time.”

Saints kicked-off this campaign with a 1-0 defeat against Hibs at Easter Road.

They play Aberdeen this afternoon and then host Rangers next Sunday.

It’s a tough start to the season. But Flynn is adamant Saints won’t be fearful of the fixtures.

He went on: “Aberdeen have been away in Europe and Rangers have a midweek game before they come here.

“There’s no point looking at these fixtures and saying they’re write-off games. “That’s not the way I’m looking at them. “We went to Easter Road last week and I definitely thought we should have got something from the game.

“I’m looking forward to today’s match. “It will be a tough game for us. But it will be tough for Aberdeen as well.”
