Pet pam-purring: Keep your pooch in prime shape

- By Katy Gordon mail@sundaypost.com

Your pet is a part of the family, and like the rest of your loved ones, it’s important to keep them healthy and happy.

The great thing is that it doesn’t take too much time, effort or money to ensure that our furry, feathered or scaly friends are living their best lives.

Here are just a few ways you can ensure the health and wellbeing of your pets.

l Keep them safe: Make sure your animal has an ID chip and/or collar (remember, legally all dogs in Scotland must now have up-to-date chips) in case they get lost. Also, make your house “pet friendly” by moving any hazards and toxic substances out of their reach.

l Take them for check ups: Just like people, it’s good to get a health check every now and

then. Vets can check the animal’s weight, teeth and run tests that will hopefully ensure that any potential illnesses are caught quickly.

l Get them a haircut: Grooming is important for furry animals, particularly in the summer when the temperature rises. It gets rid of any fur that might cause mats to develop. Getting their claws trimmed will stop them from growing long and uncomfortable.

l Get lots of exercise: Most animals love exercise, both physical and mental. For dogs, a walk in the great outdoors is a great way for them to stay active, spend time with their owner and also meet other dogs along the way. If you can’t get out yourself, then there are plenty of dog walking services available to ensure your four-legged friend gets out and about.

l Feed them well: A good diet is key to giving your pet a long and happy life. Goodquality pet food can usually provide everything an animal needs, but vets can provide supplements if required. Also make sure to keep the water in their bowl fresh – and don’t overdo the treats.
