Food, glorious food, from all over Scotland

-

From the Highlands to the Borders, Scotland’s larder is bulging with delicious goodies for your picnic basket. Keep it local and pack some traditional fare.

The Highlands & Islands

Try smoked seafood from the Stornoway Smokehouse, including whisky-cured hot and cold smoked salmon, smoked sea trout and Stornoway kippers, or cuts of cold meat including venison chorizo from Great Glen Charcuterie. Wash down with a refreshing drink from Highland Cordials, Black Isle Brewery craft beer or Rock Rose gin.

Aberdeen

An Aberdonian spread isn’t complete without the city’s famed Rowies. Aberdeen Angus roast beef is the perfect filling for any sandwich while the city’s coastal connections ensure that seafood, such as mackerel pate or langoustines are essential for any spread.

Dundee & Angus

No local al fresco menu should be without a starter of Arbroath smokie pate to spread on your oatcake of choice, followed by a Forfar bridie, for the perfect meal-inone, finished off with a slice of Dundee cake.

Edinburgh

Try some Hoods Honey or Edinburgh preserves on your sandwiches or, for something savoury, cuts of cold meat from one of the many quality local butchers, and delicious creamy cheddar from IJ Mellis Cheesemonger.

Fife

Offering a wide variety of local produce, your Fife picnic hamper will be bulging. Fill your rolls with Puddledub pork or hand-made cheese from St Andrews Farmhouse Cheese Company. Wash it down with some of Eden Brewery’s traditional Scottish ales.

Glasgow & Lanarkshire

If you’re looking to add a potato salad to the mix, look no further than Airdrie, where Albert Bartlett potatoes are grown. An assortment of chutneys and jellies are made by Miller’s Larder in Stonehouse South Lanarkshire, will make the perfect piece. Tuck into a Tunnock’s Teacake (produced in Uddingston) and a Lees’ chocolate bar. Wash down with Irn-Bru, produced in nearby Cumbernauld or pack some Tennent’s tinnies in your cool bag.

The Borders

Start with some artisan organic breads and oatcakes – plain, salt & cracked black pepper and seaweed – from Bread Works. Make up the perfect sandwich filling using organic free-range eggs from Borders Eggs or a selection of sustainably-farmed meats from Going Native Heritage Meats. Quench your thirst with some of Tempest Brewing Company’s fresh craft beers.
