Everything from our childhood experiences to our DNA can effect which smells we are drawn to, so it’s not surprising scent is so personal to an individual.
Anna Friel, 43, who stars in new ITV drama Deep Water, revealed last week how she even chooses the perfect fragrance for each of her TV roles to help her get into character and wears it for weeks before rehearsals start.
With a scent for every character, she now has 29 perfumes at home.
Imogen Russon-Taylor, who owns Scotland’s first luxury fragrance house, Kingdom Scotland, says someone’s perfume can reveal as much about them as what they wear or how they act.
Imogen, who creates her own bespoke range of scents, says: “A choice of fragrance is definitely linked to your personality.
“Whether you are bold and confident, gentle and reflective, or an occasional risk-taker your choice of fragrance can reflect that facet of your personality.
“But it is also influenced by your era and which part of the world you were brought up in.
“Scent has a unique ability to transport you back in time. It can take you to a particular memory, with a special person, a lost love – or evoke a sense of place – so your fragrance is linked to your life experience.
“Mood has a huge effect. You may be feeling sexy and provocative, or demure, thoughtful. Whatever, there are so many perfumes to reflect that mood and occasion.”
