Fresh start at Caley ideal tonic for Keatings

- By Jim Black sport@sundaypost.com

James Keatings is relieved to have the opportunity to rebuild his life and career in Inverness after a nightmare period battling depression.

Caley Thistle boss John Robertson gave the 27-year-old from Wishaw the chance to start again when he handed Keatings a two-year deal in May.

And the grateful former Celtic, Hearts, Hibs, St Johnstone and Hamilton player has repaid Robbo’s faith with goals, including a double in Inverness’ 5-0 home win over Morton on Friday evening

He has also chipped in with four assists after declaring: “It’s about rediscovering the form I showed earlier in my career.

“The past two or three years, my problems off the pitch have been well documented and I also had to deal with injuries as well.

“Friday nights were worst, sitting in the house knowing I wouldn’t be playing the next day.

“There was no buzz and I wouldn’t even go to watch games because it had reached the stage when it was all dragging me down so much.

“I was in a very dark place, but, fortunately friends, family and my agent at the time got me the right help.

“I still talk to people and go to treatment because depression isn’t something that disappears overnight.”

With the fire back in his belly and his head in a much better place, Keatings highlighted the part Robertson has played in his rehabilitation.

He added: “I knew the manager from my time at Hearts and we kept in contact, so when he showed interest I knew it was someone who believed in me and was aware of what I could do.

“This was a real chance for me. I’m away from home and my little girl is down the road.

“But it was about coming here and getting fit and enjoying football again after a period of two years where I can’t recall a single game I enjoyed.

“Life in general was tough. But this is a lovely place to live and the boys in the dressing room, the manager, and the backroom staff have been amazing with me and I’m getting there.

“I’m fitter, but it’s about not pushing it too far and just taking it game by game and keep building on that.

“I’m also much happier. The biggest bit for me was to enjoy football again and that’s what I’m doing.”
