Woodgate hails Boro’s best display so far

- By Mike Rimmer sport@sundaypost.com

Jonathan Woodgate felt his Middlesbrough side deserved more than they got from their thrilling 2-2 draw with Bristol City at Ashton Gate.

The hosts took the lead when Niclas Eliasson’s cross was met with a header from Kasey Palmer, but Boro equalised after 64 minutes, Taylor Moore diverting Paddy McNair’s cross into his own net.

Woodgate’s men then added another through Britt Assombalonga, but City hit back when sub Callum O’Dowda crossed for Tommy Rowe to net.

Woodgate said: “I thought we were the better side and deserved to win. It was a top-class performance and our best of the season so far.”

Wayne Routledge’s late goal moved Swansea top of the Championship following a 1-0 victory over Leeds at Elland Road. Having soaked up pressure and seen Leeds miss plenty of chances, Routledge’s 90th-minute strike won it.

Kamil Grosicki’s bizarre 40-yard free-kick earned Hull an away point, as Grant McCann’s side secured a 1-1 draw at Millwall despite finishing the match with nine players on the pitch.

After Jed Wallace’s early spot-kick had put the home side in front, Grosicki’s floated effort nestled in the far corner.

Hull were reduced to nine men as first injury forced sub Jon Toral off, and then Josh Magennis was dismissed late on. Jordan Hugill’s double helped QPR to a 2-1 victory over Sheffield Wednesday, who had led through Steven Fletcher’s penalty.

Tony Mowbray made an uncomfortable return to West Brom as his Blackburn side fell to a 3-2 defeat. In a thrilling first half, Bradley Dack gave Mowbray’s side the lead after just 26 seconds, but Matt Phillips equalised before Jake Livermore and Grady Diangana made it 3-1.

Bradley Johnson handed Blackburn a lifeline.

Brentford inflicted more misery on Derby as they brushed aside the Rams 3-0 at Griffin Park.

Bryan Mbeumo netted the opener before Ollie Watkins’ struck a double.

Albert Adomah produced another super-sub performance to rescue a point for Nottingham Forest against Preston. Billy Bodin’s second goal of the season looked set to give Preston all three points at the City Ground.

Stoke’s search for a first Championship victory of the season goes on after Birmingham came from behind to win 2-1.

Charlton extended their unbeaten start to six games with a 2-0 victory at Reading.

Luton came from behind to beat struggling Huddersfield Town.

And strugglers Wigan and Barnsley played out a goalless draw.
