I’m kinda addicted to Kinder – and any other supermarket bargains

-

I’m a creature of habit so when I’m in the supermarket I tend to buy the same products, regardless of whether they’re on offer or not.

That said, if I ever see a discount on those expensive dishwasher and laundry tablets, I’m right in there.

We all love bargains, and multi-buys can be a temptation as I found in my local Co-op the other day when they were selling my favourite little Kinder chocolate bars, four for just a pound. The problem was I ate the lot in one sitting so it was a false economy as I could have just bought one and felt better about myself afterwards.

It seems false economies are a bit of a feature of modern-day retailing, with a Which? investigation finding many stores are guilty of misleading customers on discounts and offers with so-called “special prices” that are in place for most of the year and multi-buy offers that actually cost more.

After my years working in retail, I know certain products are discounted as loss leaders in an effort to get people into the store and keep them coming back.

But you would hope supermarkets would be more upfront about it and only offer genuine discounts.

But I’m prepared to cut them some slack as it must be a mammoth task trying to stay competitive in a ferocious market.

I use my local Co-op a lot, as the staff are friendly and helpful and they’re open early to late. I can get in and out quickly and I’m appreciative of that given the challenges facing stores with online shopping and out-oftown retail centres.

If we don’t support them we’ll lose them.
