Duke back on duty but still under a cloud

Prince Andrew has attended his first public ceremony since the scandal of his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein forced him to cancel a string of events.

But his appearance at a ceremony marking the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Bruges yesterday came as his hosts at another event next week – an Under-18s golf event in Northern Ireland – came under pressure.

The Duke of York has been forced to cancel a string of public engagements amid growing allegations over his friendship with Epstein.

Charities associated with the Duke also faced questions, with one, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, last month issuing a statement saying he was no longer its patron.

The Duke is expected to be at the Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland tomorrow for the Duke of York Young Champions Trophy, a tournament for Under-18 golfers.

Although he is patron of the club, members are concerned his visit will attract negative coverage.

The fact the event is for young golfers, both male and female, offers further possibilities for unwelcome publicity should the duke be photographed with a teenage girl.

One member said: “No one wants to dis-invite the duke but maybe it would be best for everyone if he decided he wasn’t able to come.”

Epstein was found hanged in his cell on August 10 in New York while facing fresh charges of sex trafficking and sex trafficking conspiracy.
