Robbo: Dec is the answer to Scotland woes

- By Alan Temple SPORT@SUNDAYPOST.COM

Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson insists Declan Gallagher can be the answer to Scotland’s defensive woes.

The towering centre-half, a summer signing from Livingston, was imperious during their 3-2 triumph over Hearts at Tynecastle and bagged the opening goal with a clinical header.

It was Gallagher’s first goal since making the switch to the Steelmen, capping a fine start to his Fir Park career.

And, while Robinson believes Motherwell stars can often be overlooked, he has faith Gallagher can follow in the footstep of Northern Ireland internationalist Liam Donnelly and gain recognition from Steve Clarke.

Robinson said: “I thought my two centre-halves were outstanding and Declan Gallagher must be close to Scotland reckoning if he keeps playing like that.

“I think when you are playing at Motherwell maybe you don’t get the credit you deserve, but Steve Clarke has been to our games and he is well aware of him.

“I wouldn’t tell Steve what to do. He has done a hell of a lot more than me in the game but I’m sure he will be on his radar.”

Gallagher’s effort was followed by superb strikes by Sherwin Seedorf and Jermaine Hylton as Motherwell claimed a richly-merited triumph – their first win at Tynecastle since January 2014.

The Steelmen also struck the woodwork in a result that could have been ever more handsome. That’s three wins on the spin for Robinson’s charges.

He beamed: “To come to Tynecastle and create that amount of chances was fantastic. I still think there are aspects of our game that can get better. That was the real pleasing aspect.

“I enjoy winning football matches and to come to a place like Tynecastle, a superb stadium and incredible atmosphere, and win was great. We should have won by more and we made life difficult for ourselves at the end.”

He also heaped praise on Dutchman Seedorf, whose spectacular strike from distance was a particular pearler.

Robinson added: “Sherwin can do that but he drives me crazy at times! Jermaine [Hylton] drives me crazy, James Scott drives me crazy but they win football matches for us.”
