Veggie and vegan eateries
With more and more foodies choosing to give up meat, here’s a selection of tempting restaurants
Saramago Cafe Bar
Café-bar of the CCA arts & exhibition centre. In the midst of the west end of Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow, a calm, laid-back restaurant which takes its foodie and vegan credentials seriously. A lofty atrium space and nice people either side of the counter. Small plates, great soups and salads. May seem samey over time. cca-glasgow.com 0141 352 4920
Grassroots Café
Spacious self-service café and deli, conscientiously and carefully run, with an eclectic menu from curry to tofu dishes, veggie meatballs and burgers to delicious, thin pizza. Not in the hipster veggie family, perhaps, but some of the best vegetarian and vegan dishes in town. Not licensed. Open seven days till 7.30pm. 20 Woodlands Road, Glasgow 0141 237 4646
Ranjit’s Kitchen
Minimalist, stripped-back southside caff, with home-cooking Panjabi streetfood vibe. Takeaway and benches. Noon-8.30pm. Closed Monday. 607 Pollokshaws Road, Glasgow ranjitskitchen.com 0141 423 8222
Pumpkin Brown
Next to Dance Base, where people are in good shape, but in the midst of the Grassmarket where bad diets abound, is Edinburgh’s “freshest” café. All organic, all vegan takeaway and sit-in. Snacks and the best good-for-you smoothies. Coffee with all the plant-based milk variants. Feel clean! Seven days 8.30am-6pm. pumpkinbrown.com 0131 629 1720
The Mosque Kitchens
There are two Mosque Kitchens; the one on the original site (no website or phone), through an archway in West Nicolson St, is the totally stripped-back streetfood version, with some seats upstairs behind the Mosque and a tented section in the lane. You order in the kitchen and can eat for under a fiver.
