‘Home’ game is a trip into the unknown

-

Former Stenhousemuir boss Brown Ferguson takes charge of Linlithgow Rose for the first time this afternoon when they face Stirling University in the Scottish Cup.

Ferguson gave up a coaching post within the Rangers Youth Academy to take on the job at Prestonfield.

And whilst he knows Stirling University well, he admits he does not know Stirling University FC at all.

The 38-year-old explained: “I work with swimmers, tennis player and curlers at the Sports Institute of Scotland, which is based on the campus at the University, so I know the environment well.

“However, I do not know much about their football team.

“I know the manager, Chris Geddes, know they are a competitive Lowland League side, and know a few of their players. But I do not know how they go about things as a team.

“If their players are inspired by the surroundings and facilities, then we are in for tough start.”

Ferguson added: “We are in the East of Scotland League now, which is almost a replica of the junior league that Linlithgow left last year.

“The competition is fierce and, of course, all the clubs are wanting to copy Bonnyrigg Rose and get promoted to Lowland League.

“With all the changes that have gone on to get aligned with the pyramid structure, it is difficult to say how much stronger one league is than another.

“I met my players for the first time on Tuesday, and I was impressed with the focus they already had on Sunday.”

For his part, The Scholars’ boss is wary of taking on Rose in Ferguson’s first outing.

Chris Geddes said: “We know that Linlithgow are a good side, and I expect a very competitive match, especially as their players will be looking to impress Brown.

“Thankfully we are going into the game after a good win at Spartans in our last outing.”
