Robson-Kanu keeps Baggies at the summit

-

West Bromwich Albion stayed top of the table after a late Hal Robson-Kanu goal gave them a 1-0 win at under-fire Jonathan Woodgate’s Middlesbrough.

Boro had the pick of the chances in an uneventful first half with George Saville seeing his effort cleared off the line by Kyle Bartley. But Robson-Kanu was on hand to put the leaders in front, tapping the ball in at the back post following a scrappy goalmouth scramble.

Mark Bowen celebrated his first game in charge of Reading after taking over as manager last Monday with a dramatic win at home to in-form Preston.

American Matthew Miazga scored the only goal eight minutes into injury time.

Kalvin Phillips also hit the only goal of the game as Leeds United edged past Birmingham City to move into the automatic promotion places.

Phillips opened the scoring after 65 minutes after the ball squirmed through Lee Camp to give the hosts a deserved win. United, who have scored just five times in their opening six home games, had dominated the first half, but were unable to trouble the Blues’ defence.

But they did just enough in the second half to mark the club’s 100th birthday celebrations in fitting fashion.

Two second-half penalties taken by Ebere Eze gave QPR a 3-2 victory at Hull.

Jarrod Bowen gave Hull the lead with a lovely goal after 21 minutes, which Ryan Manning equalised.

Eze then earned a 78th-minute spotkick which he coolly slotted past George Long to make it 2-1. With two minutes of normal time remaining, Eze then won another penalty which was converted with similar composure.

Josh Magennis scored deep into injury-time to give Hull hope.

Substitute Juninho Bacuna scored within six minutes of his introduction to give Huddersfield a 2-2 draw at Blackburn. The Terriers took a 12th-minute lead through Karlan Grant’s penalty, before Lewis Holtby took advantage of a defensive error to mark his full debut with a goal.

Bradley Dack put Rovers ahead before the break, but Dutch midfielder Bacuna changed the complexion of the game.

Barnsley and Swansea were forced to settle for a point each after a 1-1 draw at Oakwell. Andre Ayew’s header on 70 minutes gave the Swans the lead but they were pegged back within 180 seconds as Alex Mowatt levelled for the hosts with a calm finish after a quickfire break.
