Eco shop opens

A Largs woman is joining the war on waste by opening a unique shop. Pioneering Marina Etchells has been inspired to try to do her bit to eliminate the need for packing and plastics finding our way into oceans. Marina, 36, said her new shop, Minimal Footprint, will “eliminate the need for unnecessar­y packaging. You simply bring your own containers.” Largs and Millport Weekly News

Balfour Hospital’s Pam Haliday is among a rare band of midwives who can claim to have delivered both a new baby and, years earlier, her mum. Jail transport row

The security firm responsibl­e for prisoner transport to Scotland’s courts has come under fire with the service being described as a “total shambles.” It follows a chaotic week at Jedburgh Sheriff Court where the proceeding­s were severely disrupted on three days due to the failures of GeoAmey. A GeoAmey spokesman apologised for the delays.

Olympic cup returns

An ancient cup smuggled out of Greece by Herman Goering decades after it was awarded to the winner of the first modern Olympic marathon has been returned to Athens after being discovered in a German museum. The cup, found in a tomb of Thebes dated around 540 BC, had been presented to Spyros Louis, after the revived Olympic Games of 1896.

Syrian holidays

Russian tour operators have begun selling holidays to war-ravaged Syria despite government warnings to avoid the country. Syria has been wracked by eight years of conflict after anti-government protests in 2011 devolved into civil war.
