Five star Wullie: Critics hail musical
Reviewers say stage show is awfy good
Oor Wullie The Musical has hit the stage and Scotland’s favourite son is getting some rave reviews.
The stage show, which opened in Dundee last weekend, has been acclaimed by audiences and critics alike as fans flock to see Oor Wullie like they’ve never seen him before.
The Guardian said the production had “wit and verve” and “there are star turns throughout, none more so than Martin Quinn in the title role, hair spiked punkishly, boots turned in coyly and, despite his tearaway status, always ready to burst into tears”.
The Herald commended the production’s “neat comic writing” and “a lovely score, with some catchy tunes and rip-roaring songs”.
The Scotsman felt the “songs are merry and heartfelt”, adding that the “11-strong company dance and sing their way to a snowy closing scene that... marks the arrival of a new Scottish musical that will surely warm the hearts of thousands in Dundee this Christmas, and on a tour around the country, early next year”.
And industry bible The Stage says its “hit status north of the border is all but assured. If wider audiences can be convinced, the template for success on the level of past Rep hit Sunshine On Leith is there”. Martin Quinn (Oor Wullie), said: “If Oor Wullie was going to be put on stage, I think this was the way to do it.”
