Perth curler Glen Muirhead and his team edged closer to a quarter-final spot following a narrow victory at the Saskatoon Classic in Saskatchewan yesterday.

Muirhead, his brother Thomas and fellow siblings Kyle and Cammy Smith had not played for more than six weeks, after failing to qualify for the European Championships and choosing not to defend their Penticton Classic title in British Columbia last week.

The Scots led local skip Brent Gedak 4-1 in Saskatoon and held off a late fightback to win 4-3.

They will face Winnipeg’s Braden Calvert next.

angling

The Cormorant is a great pattern for the winter rainbows, especially when it incorporates rabbit fur and the colour black, as winter rainbows much prefer darker colours.

The Black Rabbit Cormorant is tied on a size-10 Kamasan B175 hook using 14/0 black Wisp thread. The body is natural peacock herl, ribbed with fine red holographic tinsel and the wing is black rabbit.

▪ Despite the awful weather in East Lothian, there have been some good catches reported at the Markle Fishery.

Jimmy Watters (Gorebrige) kept three for 7lb 8oz on a Montana, John Daly (Edinburgh) had three C&R on a Black Rabbit, Bruce Hunter (Edinburgh) took eight on Lures and Edinburgh’s Douglas Thorburn had six C&R on Nymphs.

▪ At the Swanswater Fishery, near Stirling, the bulk of the catches were taken on lures with Dancer, Humungus and Cat’s Whisker being the favourite patterns.

Some of the best fly bags included Robert Park from Lennoxtown with four for 12lb, Stuart Nicholson (Knightswood) took four for 11lb 12oz.
