I’d boo too, admits McPake as Dee lose in injury time

Despairing Dundee boss James McPake insisted their fans were right to hurl dog’s abuse – and said he would have done the same had he been watching from the stand.

McPake was forced to endure a third straight defeat, which brought a chorus of dissent from the fed-up home support as two-goal hero Stephen Dobbie snatched victory for the Doonhamers in injury time after substitute Danny Johnson looked like giving the Dark Blues a share of the points with his 93rd-minute equaliser.

Dobbie’s sublime first-half strike had put Allan Johnston’s seventhplaced side in the driving seat, before Johnson levelled for McPake’s men prior to Dobbie’s dramatic winner just 11 seconds later.

And McPake, who must now lift his troops for next weekend’s hazardous trip to face Arbroath, said: “I totally get why they were booing and showing dissatisfaction at end.

“If I were one, I can guarantee I’d be doing the exact same thing.

“Eleven seconds after levelling, it’s a sucker-punch at the other end and a moment of madness.

“Jordon Forster knows he made a mistake. He usually headers the ball 40 yards up the pitch but he’s made an error this time.

“It’s not been good enough recently. We need to find a way to get results back at this football club.”

It was Queens who began brightest. Connor Murray got wide on the overlap and his low cross for Darren Lyon was smothered by goalkeeper Jack Hamilton, back after surgery last month on his appendix.

Dundee were struggling to create although midway through the first half Graham Dorrans swept a raking pass wide to Declan McDaid. McDaid’s cross was decent but Darren Brownlie did just enough to clear the danger as Kane Hemmings was preparing to pounce inside the six-yard box.

However, Queens took the lead just approaching the half-hour mark. Brownlie began the move by feeding the skipper. The 36-year-old forward ghosted past a couple of Dundee defenders before unleashing an unstoppable 20-yard left-foot effort that nestled in Hamilton’s far corner.

Instead of taking the game to Queens after the break, Dundee almost found themselves 2-0 down within minutes of the restart.

Murray was sent clean through and the youngster’s dipping shot fizzed just over the bar.

Hemmings, in the 57th minute, came within inches of hauling Dundee level only for Queens keeper Robbie McCrorie to scramble his close-range shot off the line.

Dobbie then had a chance to increase the visitors’ lead in 63 minutes, but his curled shot cannoned off Dundee defender Forster for a corner.

Johnson thought he’s snatched a point for the hosts with a well-taken 20-yard strike from Jordan McGhee’s pass, but Dobbie had the last laugh when Forster got caught on the ball allowing the Queens captain to keep calm and apply the finishing touch with a dink over Hamilton.

Palmerston boss Johnston said: “I thought it was an outstanding performance. We didn’t deserve to lose that goal. If we had dropped points it would have been a travesty.”
