Going out Restaurant of the week

Alhambra Cafe, 453 Main St, Bellshill, Lanarkshire

-

Location

Just on the outskirts of the wee Lanarkshire town. Probably best reached by car, although it is on a main bus route and the closest stop is just a stone’s throw away.

First impressions

There’s a nautical feel, from the driftwood and aqua blue walls to the old gas lamp lighting and the grafittied octopus painted on the wall. This chippy is contemporary, with a little bit of old-school glam.

Service

A friendly waitress shows us to our table and hands us a couple of menus. After allowing us ample time to peruse them, she’s back, ready to take our order. The drinks arrive promptly and the food, fresh from the fryer not long after. Speedy and efficient.

Menu

big. The fish tea is a good deal and clearly a popular option. It comes with bread and butter, mushy peas and a drink – all for the bargain price of £8.95.

Taste

The fish is fab, the chips are some of the best we’ve ever tasted. Fresh and not greasy in the slightest. The chicken breaded supper is nice, with a variety of texture from breast to leg – and the portion is huge. Come hungry and you’ll leave feeling full to the brim – and satisfied.

Ambience

The dim lighting sets the mood. It’s calm and relaxed. A simple meal in nice surroundings. It’s clearly a popular haunt, with tables filling up during our visit. By the time we left, a queue was starting to form.

Price

Very reasonable. The bill came in at under £25 for two adults and two kids. A restaurant meal for the price of a takeaway really.

Toilets

Clean and spacious.

?? ?? Simple, but pretty varied for a chippie. As well as fish and chips, there’s chicken, haggis, sausage, black pudding, and even fritters. The suppers are pretty sizeable but there’s the option of a minisupper if your appetite isn’t that
● The Alhambra is clearly a favourite chippie in Bellshill
The Alhambra has stood the test of time as it recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. Customers who grew up in the area still regularly travel back for a traditional tea here.
