Teko Expedition Merino Socks, £35.90

I used these comfy socks on the odd hill day, so I took them for the overnight camp on the OMM two-day mountain marathon in October. When chilly, there’s no nicer feeling than slipping into quality socks. I made the error of running in ankle socks on day one and my heels were a mess. Next day, I opted to keep on the Tekos. Heavy heel cushioning helped stop damage and, being calf-length, no debris got to my feet. Even wet, the Merino wool stayed warm.

Helly Hansen Lifaloft Insulator Jacket, £160

Warmth versus weight seems a never-ending debate for hiking trips. In summer I keep an insulated gilet in my pack for emergency core warmth, but as soon as the temperatures drop I swap it for this Helly Hansen Lifaloft. It’s incredibly warm with Lifa® and PrimaLoft® synthetic technology to trap airflow. It’s thick, but squashes down, and weighs 230g. It may only be water-repellent, but it’s durable and the perfect choice for that all-important extra layer.

Van Rysel RR 900 Cycling Jersey, £39.99

Decathlon claim this jersey is perfect for racing in warm weather. It’s not often that my cycling can claim to be either of those, but I’ve no doubt this top would keep you cool. The attention to ventilation is so thorough that the jersey is quite see-through in the lower half. Being modest, I wore a base layer underneath, which rather undermines the USP of the top. I also found the fit really tight, even though it was an XL. Purely for hot international events, but perfect for that.

Jack Wolfskin Wilderness Lite Texapore, £160

Comfort is key when it comes to hiking, and these boots fit well and feel light. I was sceptical of how flexible the soles would be, but they proved protective over rocky terrain. Damp feet can cause rubbing, so I was keen to test the Texapore O2+ breathable membrane. Even after being almost submerged in waterlogged marshland, my feet stayed dry and blister-free. I can’t recommend these boots highly enough, they’re worth every penny.
