Queries over the past few months about the odd names of American Football players names, and I’ve found another – Shy Tuttle. Tell me about him, please. – A.
Defensive tackle for the New Orleans Saints, Shy was actually born Shyheim.
At6ft3insand22 stone, the 24-year-old from North Carolina has nothing to be shy about.
He has been an ever present for the Saints this season in his rookie year.
Watching the gathering of NATO leaders this week, it struck me that I had never seen German Chancellor Angela Merkel with her husband. Indeed, is she married? – F.
Angela Kasner married fellow research scientist, Ulrich Merkel, in 1977. The couple divorced five years later.
In the early ’80s she met quantum chemist and professor, Joachim Sauer.
They wed in 1998.
This may sound daft, but my granddad would like to know how many Stooges there were in The Three Stooges. – D.
It isn’t daft at all, as the comedy gang changed their line-up over the course of their amazingly long career, which lasted from 1922-70.
The original Stooge was Moe Howard, and he was joined over the years by Larry Fine, Curly Howard, Shemp Howard, Joe Besser and Curly Joe DeRita – so seven Stooges in all.
On a walk round Dundee’s Victoria Docks, a few of street names puzzled me – Thorter Loan, Thorter Way, and Thorter Row. Does it have some nautical origins? – M.
Thorter is an old Scots word meaning slanted, so it possibly means that the streets were originally at an oblique angle to other street.
And Loan, as in Thorter Loan, meant a strip of grass.
